Why this is different

Most HEIC converters work by uploading your photo to a server, converting it there, and returning a download link. Your image passes through their infrastructure — often with unclear retention policies.

Filecraft runs the conversion entirely in your browser. The decoder (libheif compiled to WebAssembly) executes locally. Your image bytes are processed on your device and never sent over the network.

This is architecturally verifiable: open your browser's DevTools, go to the Network tab, then convert a photo. You will see no outbound request carrying your image data.

What is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhone and iPad since iOS 11. It produces smaller files than JPG at similar quality, but is not universally supported by Windows apps, Android, or most online services.

Why won't my iPhone photos open on Windows or Android?

Windows requires a paid HEIC codec (or a free codec from the Microsoft Store) to open .heic files natively. Android apps vary. Converting to JPG makes your photos compatible everywhere without installing anything.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

Minimal loss. The tool encodes JPEG at 92% quality, which is visually lossless for most photos. HEIC photos viewed on a non-HEIC-capable screen are often re-encoded anyway at lower quality.

Will EXIF data (GPS, date, camera settings) be preserved?

No. The conversion re-encodes the image pixels and does not carry over the original EXIF metadata. This is intentional — removing metadata is often desirable when sharing photos.

Can I convert multiple photos at once?
